Trump Commutes John Dougherty’s Prison Sentence
Former Philadelphia labor leader John “Johnny Doc” Dougherty was released from federal prison after President Donald Trump commuted the remainder of his six-year sentence. Dougherty had served less than two years after convictions for bribery and union embezzlement.
According to his attorney, the commutation was granted largely due to Dougherty’s need to care for his seriously ill wife. Previous requests for compassionate release and home confinement had been denied by a federal judge.
The presidential action allows Dougherty to leave prison immediately and eliminates remaining penalties, including restitution obligations tied to the case. However, his criminal convictions remain on record.
Once one of Pennsylvania’s most influential labor and political figures, Dougherty led IBEW Local 98 and played a major role in state and local elections. Despite his release, federal labor laws prevent him from holding elected union office for years because of his convictions.
