PREGNANT In STATE PRISONS and JAILS

Medical Copays and Fees Block Access to Medical Care.

THE IMPORTANCE OF

  1. A COMPREHENSIVE PRESENTENCE REPORT
  2. UNDERSTANDING THE ADMINISTRATIVE REMEDY PROCESS

It’s alarming that a large portion of incarcerated individuals lack access to even the most essential healthcare services, which is a clear violation of their constitutional right to proper medical care while in custody. Shockingly, nearly 20% of individuals in state prison have not received any health-related visit since their admission. This problem is particularly prevalent among pregnant individuals, those with chronic physical conditions, and those with mental health concerns. Primary care is consistently not provided to a substantial portion of the affected population, which must be addressed immediately.

The lack of consistent treatment for chronic physical conditions can have catastrophic consequences for the 62% of inmates with such conditions. These individuals must have access to ongoing medical attention. Yet, the current system falls short, with 14% of inmates with chronic conditions not having seen a clinician since their incarceration and 22% not receiving healthcare within their first year of imprisonment. This is simply unacceptable and demands urgent attention and reform.
